District Recognition
Recognising performance excellence at all levels!

Many of our Toastmaster members in District 80 deserve to be recognised for their achievements in 2015-16.

The various Distinguished Programs recognise those clubs, areas, divisions that meet Toastmasters International’s growth and educational goals. The programs serve as management tools for membership recruitment and retention strategies, club growth and educational award achievement.

As part of the district success strategic plan, we created various awards to encourage and motivate our members and leaders to go for that extra mile. May these awards spur them on to more profound performance in the years to come for the benefit of their fellow Toastmasters.

Find out more about the District 80 2015-2016 Hall of Fame.
Click here to download the Hall of Fame Booklet!

Most awards had been given out at Divisions’ events last term and during the First Club Officers’ Training Events in this term.

The award recipients, in the booklet page 1 to page 12, will be recognized during the Hall of Fame ceremony, on 22nd October, just after the District 80 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests.

Looking forward to have the most memorable Hall of Fame with all Award Recipients!

I am so delighted to announce that our members have been diligently presenting their prepared speech projects and fulfilling their respective leadership roles in the past three months since the beginning of the current term. As of 26 September 2016, we have awarded 103 CC’s, 15 ACB’s, 9 ACS’s, 10 ACG’s, 45 CL’s, 25 ALB’s, 18 ALS’s and 19 DTM’s. That’s a total of 249 education/leadership awards, of which there are 9 Triple Crown Award winners. Congratulations to all the award achievers.

District 80’s incentives for members to continue striving for education and leadership excellence are still running.

On club DCP achievement, the following clubs have attained 5 or more than 5 DCP goals:

  • NUS Toastmasters Club (8 DCP goals met)
  • IBM Toastmasters Club Singapore (6 DCP goals met)
  • Ang Mo Kio C.C. Club (6 DCP goals met)
  • Tampines Changkat Toastmasters (6 DCP goals met)
  • Buona Vista Toastmasters Club (6 DCP goals met)
  • Toastmasters Club Of Singapore (6 DCP goals met)
  • SIM I Club (5 DCP goals met)
  • Braddell Heights II Toastmasters Club (5 DCP goals met)
  • SCCCI Mandarin Club (5 DCP goals met)
  • TLCS Club (5 DCP goals met)
  • Bharathiyar Toastmasters Club (5 DCP goals met)

Congratulations to all club officers and members of the above clubs for qualifying as Distinguished Clubs or better.

All of us can achieve more by committing ourselves to our undertaking when we joined the Toastmasters program, our promise as a Toastmaster. I quote our International President Mike Storkey DTM:

“It is regrettable that today so few members recall the vital promise we all made when we first joined—the simple set of guidelines that, if we made the commitment to observe, would ensure that individually and collectively we would all reap the benefits of the Toastmasters program. Imagine how your club would look if we all made the commitment to fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the simple 10-point promise. With our current drive to achieve quality clubs, meetings and service to our members, what better way to achieve these goals than commit to the promise?”

My Dear Toastmasters

3 months into our term and you have done so much. We wish to thank you for submitting your club officers’ lists diligently, attending the Club Officers Training and working on your educational and leadership program. We thank our dedicated Area Directors for visiting your clubs and overseeing the area contests and we thank the ever high-spirited Division Directors for organizing the Club Officer Training, and the Division Contests which has begun.

Lately, the district has received some feedback on mistakes made by some inexperienced contests officers resulting in some unhappy experiences for some contestants. The district views these feedback seriously and has taken steps to educate these officers. The District will also take steps to mitigate these mistakes by providing more training on how to conduct  successful contests.

The 2nd District Executive Council Meeting (DEC) / 1st District Council Meeting (DCM) will be on 21st October. DEC meetings will involve the District Officers, Division and Area Directors. DCM involves the above mentioned and the Club Presidents and Vice-Presidents Education. An official notice has been sent to these members on 21st September. Please alert the district if you have not received it.

World Championship of Public Speaking

History has been made; Darren Tay has done us proud by bringing home the cup. He is now officially the “Golden Boy” of D80. In two subsequent years we have 2 Champions. Manoj Vasudevan was placed third in 2015 and Darren brought back the Championship this year. Will we be third time lucky and have 3 winners in a row? It’s possible!

Toastmasters programs are magical, but you need to work at it to realize the magic. It didn’t work overnight for Darren. He has put in years of hard work. It was 8 years ago when he walked into Punggol TMC and like most of us, puzzled about what Toastmasters can do for us. Today, he found the answer.  Hard work paid off for Manoj and Darren. Hard work will work for you too. Follow your dreams and  you may be our next success story!

Washington, D.C, World Convention 2016

It was an exciting 6 days, as Immediate  Past District Director, Program Quality Director and yours truly walked the stage for achieving Select Distinguished District status.  Thank you all the members who have put in so much effort in this collective achievement. You have achieved close to 1000 educational and leadership awards and brought in over 700 new members. Keep up the momentum and aim for more this term.

District Training

Together with Program Quality Director, Tay Tiam Teang, Club Growth Director, Harikrishnan, the District Trio attended 2 days of intensive training and took home valuable tips on tackling the 3 Critical Success Factors. We intend to share them with our members at the next District Leadership Training in January.

Fun and Relax

It was not all work for us as we had fun and fellowship too. The 3 of us joined the “Moonlight Monuments” tours and visited many places of interests. One of my most inspiring statues was Abraham Lincoln, the President who abolished slavery in America.  Here are 2 of his inspiring quotes that have been widely used.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power”.

“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years”.

My other favorite was Martin Luther King;  “I had a Dream”. He was obviously a great believer in chasing one’s dreams. Let us be inspired by his big dreams and make ours a reality too. For our dreams to be realized we need to aim, plan and take massive actions. Washington, D.C was indeed a great place to be inspired.

District Contests 22nd October

Our special event, the District Contests will be on 22nd October. The ticket is priced at an extremely reasonable rate to allow many more members to enjoy and learn from the better speakers.

Take your dreams to the next level. Whether you are a contestant or are there to learn from the better speakers, bring your members and guests. Let them know the benefit of Toastmasters and invite them to join this wonderful movement.

Program Quality Challenges

PQD has created some of the best challenges for you to deliver your personal best. Take these challenges to help you create a distinguished personal goal or help another member become distinguished.

Club Growth Challenges

Similarly, CGD has designed incentives to help you push your boundary to meet membership growth and club growth. Explore and discover for yourself what you can achieve when you work towards adding 5, 10, 15 new or dual members or help to form a new club.

Town Hall Meetings

townhallmeetings1 townhallmeetings2

The district has included a 30-minute talk into these meetings. As district leaders stretch themselves to the limit by going about their daily lives, climbing the career ladder and at the same time volunteering to manage the district, we hope these talks will add value to their personal and professional lives.

Hall of Fame

This will be held in conjunction with the district contests on 22nd October. Recognition will be given to the members and teams who have achieved excellence in their duties to serve the district and who have helped District 80 to become Select Distinguished District. Be there to share their achievements.

“No man is an island”-  John Donne.

“No man is an island” dated back to 1624 but it still stands true today. Let us work together for individuals to form units, for units to form groups and for  groups to  form strength. Put our strengths together and work towards our common goals to bring excellence to our district.

Look forward to hear from you.

Empowering Members’ Journey

Author john Donne.
